ABOUT

Audio Visual Arts was created by Justin Luke in 2008 out of a desire to have a deeper engagement with the sound art and experimental music community in New York (in conjunction with the visual art community). I’d noticed that the visual world and the sound / experimental music worlds had much less overlap than I’d imagined. Seeing that I decided to create a space where such an intersection of thought and production could take place. AVA presented 100+ projects from 2008 - 2017.

EXTERIOR SOUNDS (SPEAKERS / SILVER BOX)

Exterior Sounds was an audio series for the general public. Often times it was active all day and all night. The hope was to turn the passerby onto a new way of listening. Turn them on to an under recognized artist (young or old).

The series had two modes of presentation. First, by way of a pair of weather ready speakers, aiming down to the street from the awning above the storefront at 34 East 1st Street. The audio being heard by anyone walking by. Second, by way of stainless steel box (constructed by a fabricator of analog apartment buzzer boxes for NY buildings) housing 4 inputs for headphones. Passersby could plug into one of the inputs and listen to whatever was being transmitted at that particular moment in time. The listener had no control over volume or track advancement.

Select records, audio plays, field recordings, educational material, jokes, rants, news clips, live feeds and more were broadcast to the public via these two outlets at select times.
